Black mould danger spreads across Coast Gold Coast Top Story
A DANGEROUS mould outbreak has triggered a health warning with harmful fungi appearing in homes across the Gold Coast and covering interior walls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ceilings,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], furniture, clothes and even shoes.
Local mould removalists report business has jumped by up to 400 per cent since the start of the big wet in late January as residents discover black mould rapidly growing throughout their homes.
Queensland Health warns the mould can build up after cyclones and floods, leaving people vulnerable to respiratory illnesses when they breathe, eat or touch the fungal spores.
Gold Coast Medical Association president Peter McLaren said asthma sufferers were particularly susceptible to the harmful effects of mould and urged residents to have it removed immediately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"When there mould about asthmatics need to follow their treatment plans more closely to avoid hospitalisation," he said.

Burleigh-based Biological Environmental Sustainable Technologies principal Peter Gamble said the rising damp conditions and high humidity in the past six weeks had been perfect for mould to flourish with it appearing on walls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], timber surfaces, drapery, food, insulation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], air-conditioning filters, carpet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], clothes and shoes as well as on outdoor pavers and footpaths.
"These types of slimy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], blackish green substances are responsible for some serious respiratory problems and they are also factors in the prevalence of asthma and bronchitis," said Mr Gamble.
"A house or school infested with any kind of mould is not a safe place at all."
Dennis Perin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of Steamatic Gold Coast, said call-outs had rocketed by 400 per cent since late January.
"We did a house on Saturday and the whole place was full of mould: walls, clothing, shoes, furniture, leather, it was everywhere," Mr Perin said.
"We average about one job a week but we getting up to 14 call-outs every few days at the moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
The Mould Men Richard Murtagh also said mould had infested dark areas such as wardrobes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], storage closets and under stairwells when residents shut their windows and blocked ventilation during the unrelenting rain.
He said the harmful mould could also be yellow-green or white but while it was often obvious,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many people did not realise the hidden hazard that was lurking in dark areas of their homes.
"It has been really busy," said Mr Murtagh.
"I went out to a garage on the Gold Coast that got flooded and there big sections of the ceilings and walls covered in thick black mould and inside the wall cavities.
"We have to totally rip out the walls,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chemically treat the affected areas and then rebuild it."
Tallebudgera Valley resident Tanya Towns is one person who has grappled with a massive mould outbreak recently as it covered her natural wood dining table and chairs, upholstery, lounge suite and entire wardrobe.
"I got a lovely new Driza-Bone jacket that is now completely covered in mould, I got it on my shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in my woolen clothes and all over a pair of my jeans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it going around my wardrobe," she said.
