Greipel shows his early
I heard last week that Andre Greipel pulled 1900 watts on the ergo, that's huge especially at this time of the year. He obviously spends quite a lot of time in the off-season doing intense training with a lot of power resulting in his successful Tour Down Unders.
This could be a reflection of the teams sent here but the distances appear to suit the big German who seems to come up trumps each year. Greipel has won a stage at the Tour de France,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], two stages at the Giro d'Italia and four at the Vuelta a Espana,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but here he wins a few stages on the trot just about every year. Today was his tenth stage win at the Tour Down Under and he really seems to get that early season preparation right.
The Tour Down Under is a significant event now that it's on the UCI World Tour and Greipel would be looking to accrue points both on a personal level and at a team level for Lotto-Belisol,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A few early wins before the European season starts takes a lot of pressure off a rider and the team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Cyclists can be a superstitious bunch and the early wins can be a great advantage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
During my racing career I chose to begin competition a little later by missing a few of the early season races. By the time I went over to Europe to start my season three weeks later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the team would be 15 to 20 races ahead of me. I'd be a little bit on the back foot to get to the fitness levels up to the rest of the team, so if you can get a few wins in the bag early it's great for the confidence and team morale.
Most of the Tour Down Under finishes are pretty flat and the distances are not so long which really does suit the sprinters like Greipel. In a race such as the Tour Mediterraneen or the Paris-Nice there is always a mountain top finish that is a lot harder than this year's Stage 5 finish on Old Willunga Hill, however these races are well into the racing calendar and the riders have more kilometres in their legs. The UCI wants the teams to come to Australia and as a result the TDU organisers don't want to put the field through anything too difficult in the first event of the season.
There was,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and still is,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a lot of hype about GreenEDGE but so far they've only snared a third placing on Stage 2 through Simon Gerrans. GreenEDGE could be putting all their eggs in one basket for the Stage 5 finish at Old Willunga Hill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a very risky strategy as anything can happen in a bike race and their performance to date has been a little lack lustre. In saying that however I think a lot of the teams are struggling but I hope we see a lot of GreenEDGE driving the peloton into Willunga on Saturday. The team will try and control the pace for the first lap and set up the finish for Gerrans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but with Griepel's lead and show of strength I wouldn't discount him for the General Classification win.
If the GreenEDGE team was attacking every day and having riders in every breakaway Gerrans wouldn't have the support he needs at the end of the week. It's a balance act and risky waiting until later in the race to make their final strategic move,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that looks to be their plan.
I've spent a lot of time in the Skoda tents at the Tour Village in the centre of Adelaide during the week and it really highlights this fantastic event,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. They've got a great formula with each stage starting quite close to Adelaide. It is very encouraging to see so many people supporting the event. The central location of the Tour Village and all the riders staying in the one hotel makes it easy for the fans and media alike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The whole of Adelaide comes out as the event is so spectator friendly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Riders come into the village and the public can come up and grab autographs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It's a really great atmosphere and you just don't see that at any other race in the world.
