Learn how to sail on Sydney Harbour

The introductory sailing course at was perfect a one-day course for beginners who had a little or no boating experience. To be frank, my swimming skills weren't very strong either and that's only if you can call dog-paddling "swimming".

The adventure begins
The journey starts and ends at Milson's Point and takes in the spectacular scenery of Sydney Harbour. We started off with an introduction to the safety equipment and the basic rules of sailing. You don't have to wear a life-vest onboard and I was assured by our skipper, George, that in his 15 years of teaching, he hadn't lost anyone yet.
George was incredibly friendly and helpful and gave us hilarious advice and anecdotes about sailing, from never going on long sailing trips with a spouse (you can't get away from them when you're out at sea unless you jump overboard) to making sure you always find one crewmate who can actually cook something other than two-minute noodles.
Taking hold of the steering was a little scary at first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially when you are surrounded by what seems like hundreds of other racing sailboats. The thought of a collision while you are at the helm might make you a little nervous. But rest assured, the skipper does know what they're doing even if it may seem like frighteningly close calls, just trust them.
This is a hands-on experience but if you do have any qualms, you can ask to lay low. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all participants do get a good chance at manning the yacht, working the winches (rope-pulling), raising and lowering the head and main sails,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], steering and learning how to orienteer wind direction and speed. After a few tries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you will get used to the terms and be ready to pounce into action when it's time to change the direction of the yacht.
A lunchbreak with the rich and famous
The course also includes a lunchbreak near Manly. Make sure you bring your own lunch, as well as swimmers if you want to dive in for a swim. The stop is extremely relaxing and laid back and you can almost imagine what it's like to charter your own million-dollar yacht. My other crewmates included a fireman who was trying to conquer his fear of water, and a couple who were hoping to learn how to charter their own yacht (despite George's spousal sailing advice).
The novelty of our break here was when multimillion-dollar yachts moored so close to us we could hear them chattering away about their business misadventures,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose boat had been re-done more extravagantly and which high profile celebrity was involved in what scandal. It really did look like a scene out of some gangster movie with overweight men sunbaking with their young primped wives in golden bikinis on ridiculously expensive boats. Ah, the high life.
Besides lapping up some of the most breathtaking views on the harbour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you get a chance to check out the million-dollar houses owned by celebrities,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], politicians and other high-powered folk while learning a little bit about the history of the area. You may even be surprised to see more naked skin than you expect when you cruise by some of the harbour's famous nudist beaches such as Lady Jane Bay.
The end of a long day
This course is a great way for a beginner to get their first taste of sailing whether you want to eventually charter your own boat in the future, start a new exciting hobby, or just occasionally spend a beautiful day out on the water.
You also don't need to be super-fit; the sheethand work and rope-pulling is probably the most strenuous part,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it doesn't take too much out of you either. Just make sure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that if you're going to climb around the boat, keep your balance and, as George says, "Always have one hand holding onto something!"
You also get a certificate to validate your training, which allows you to take the next-level course and become a competent crew member.
