The Lakers need to get a grip. The last time the Lakers won an NBA title, the Houston Rockets took them to seven games in the first-round series, which was in no way indicative of what was to come in the rest of the playoffs. We all know the Lakers are superior to the Nuggets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it just a matter of which team decides to show up Saturday for Game 7. Will it be the Lakers team that had six players score in double figures? Or will it be the team in which a sickly Kobe Bryant carried nearly the whole load while two 7-footers were practically invisible? Will LA continue to be stifled by a blistering Nuggets defense that left Pau Gasol with an empty stat sheet after going a pathetic 1-10 from the field in Game 6? Will Andrew Bynum continue to regress to middle school behavior by bragging without pause and sitting alone at the end of the bench like a boy whose lunch money got stolen? If each team plays to its potential, there is no doubt that the Lakers will easily beat the Nuggets in Game 7. Denver is too inconsistent and too weak from long range to beat a team with players in the post such as Gasol and Bynum with Kobe waiting in the wings. We will see what Gasol and Bynum are really made of Saturday as a Game 7 is the perfect opportunity to expose a player mental fortitude. Look for an extra boost of energy from Metta World Peace who will return from a seven game suspension to emotionally inspire the Lakers to reach their physical potential on Saturday. As lovely a Cinderella story as Kenneth Faried,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ty Lawson, JaVale McGee, Andre Miller and Corey Brewer have written, I think Denver glass slipper finally breaks come Saturday. Clippers at Grizzlies, Game 7This could very well be the end of the road for the Clippers. The edge in Game 7 has to go to the Grizzlies because of the team playoff experience last year, the injuries ailing the Clippers two star players and of course, home court advantage. Sleepy Spurs Thunder? The long layoff between the first round of the playoffs and the conference semi-finals can be long enough for the San Antonio Spurs, who are but perhaps not as old as you might think. The average age of a Spurs player is 27.29 years old, compared to the Oklahoma City Thunder, whose average age is 25.8. Greg Popovich decision to rest some of the team older players like Tim Duncan is in part, what earned him NBA Coach of the Year honors as sitting the more men on the team for a game here and there certainly paid off in the long run. The younger Thunder, whose stars, Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook are both 23 years old, might have a slightly tougher time adjusting to the long lay off, but I sure will be right back up to speed after one game, maximum. That said, does the old Big Three actually stand a chance against the young Big Three?Ehhh…no. I could see the Celtics taking Miami to six games,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but that probably as far as it goes. Again, barring injury, the Celtics CANNOT beat the Heat in a 7-game series. All that the team coming out of the West can hope for is that the guys in green put up one hell of a fight.
After last season transformation under then-rookie head coach Tom Thibodeau, 2011-2012 was supposed to be season in which Derrick Rose and the Chicago Bulls would fully bloom into a team that could legitimately challenge the Heat for a spot in the NBA Finals. But something was wrong from the start. First and foremost was the NBA lockout which kept many players away from their typical off-season workout and conditioning programs in efforts to adjust to an unknown timetable of when the season might start up again. This affected every player. Then, Rose was the passenger in a car when his buddy, the driver, was pulled over and arrested for DUI. While Rose wasn in any trouble personally, surely the incident shook the quiet 23-year-old who goes out of his way to keep his personal life private. But things seemed to turn around in late December as Rose agreed to a five-year contract extension worth a whopping $94.8 million just days before the start of a shortened NBA season. The much-deserved reward from his Chicago bosses would prove be the high point of Rose season which turned ugly quite quickly as the All-Star guard suffered a myriad of injuries. Toe, back, groin foot and ankle injuries forced Rose to miss 27 of the Bulls 66 regular season games. Rose had only missed six games in his first three NBA seasons combined. The Bulls logged a respectable 18-9 record without Rose and held on for the No. 1 seed in the East, despite the frequent absence of their superstar. Leading the series against the 76ers 1-0, the Bulls have enough talent to dispose of Philadelphia, even without Rose. As fate would have it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rose teammates are fairly used to playing without him, having figured out a system that worked well enough in the regular season. Chicago stellar defense, combined with adrenaline and the competitive spirit will propel the Bulls for the rest of this series against an inconsistent 76ers team. It the long-term prognosis that is worrisome for the Rose-less Bulls. While the Bulls beat Miami once and Boston twice without Rose during the regular season, a seven-game playoff series is a completely different animal. Rose is so important to the Bulls not just because of the points he puts up, but because of the opponent perception of him as a scoring threat, forcing double teams which allows open looks for his Bulls teammates. Who will opponents double team now? It won be Carlos Boozer or Joakim Noah. They SHOULD be the guys drawing a double team but they won be because neither is consistent offensively warranting the additional attention. Rip Hamilton and Kyle Korver certainly won draw the double team,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thus the big guys shouldn get many easy scoring opportunities down low. Ideally, opponents tried to force Rose to shoot outside instead of driving the lane, the place where he often put on a spectacular show while having his way with the defense. Watson set to start in Rose place, the defense will strive for the opposite in forcing Watson closer to the rim rather than allowing him to shoot from his comfort zone outside of the key. This will be Luol Deng time to shine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even brighter than he has already this season. He has to make good choices and consistently execute offensively. Losing your MVP can shatter one psyche. The Bulls have to find a way to quickly shake off the stench of losing Rose and focus on the immediate task, which is the 76ers.
If the semifinals at all resemble the record-breaking first round of the NHL playoffs, Hockey fans are in for a treat. Yes, the first round of postseason play featured a whopping 16 overtime games (of 48 games total) - three of which featured multiple extra periods - and three 7-game series involving a No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeded team. The first round offered up plenty of surprises as the No. 1 Canucks, the defending Cup champ No. 2 Bruins, No. 3 Panthers and No. 4 Penguins all got bounced early. 8 Kings vs. No. 2 St. Louis BluesWhat a great series this should be. Both the Blues and the Kings had very high hopes heading into the 2011-2012 season with only one of the two teams truly delivering. The Blues met their lofty expectations while the Kings faltered greatly, just squeaking into the postseason. ranked 29th overall in offense and still made the playoffs, so people weren exactly picking this No. 8 seed for a first-round upset. Against each other, the Kings got the best of the Blues in the regular season winning three of four games against St. Louis in fairly dominating fashion, scoring 9 goals to the Blues three. History probably won repeat itself because of the fact that the Blues were without Andy McDonald for all four games and David Perron and Alex Steen missed two games a piece of the four against the Kings. netminder and Vezina Trophy finalist Jonathan Quick who led the league with 10 shutouts. Quick ranked second in goals against average (1.95) and fifth in save percentage (.929). Quick is the first goalie in Kings history to log three consecutive 30-win seasons, with 35 victories in 2011-2012 and he nearly single-handedly got the Kings into the playoffs. Then again, the Kings aren exactly going up against a slouch in Blues goalie Brian Elliott who has a 1.56 GGA in 38 games with St. Louis this season. Oh ya, he logged nine shutouts as well. 4 Nashville Predators vs. No. 3 Phoenix CoyotesThe overtime fun continued with the first game of the semifinals as the Coyotes needed about 14 extra minutes to beat the Predators 4-3. The home team Coyotes broke the mold a bit as away teams were the victors in most of the first round overtime games. Phoenix has won four of those six games. Fortunately, or unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], depending on how you look at it, three of those four wins came after losing a third-period lead. The Coyotes faced a familiar problem in Game 1 as they lost a lead yet again which opened the door for the Preds to sneak back in. Luckily for Phoenix, they snuck away with the OT win,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but is playing this much hockey sustainable over two entire playoff series? Many hockey pundits expected a low-scoring series between Phoenix and Nashville, but Friday game put that idea to rest in a hurry. Both the Coyotes and Predators knocked two recent Stanley Cup winners out of the postseason (the Blackhawks and Red Wings, respectively) in the first round and will look to their goaltenders for big saves here in the semis. Smith had a 38-win season with a 2.21 GAA and eight shutouts. Rinne, on the other hand, nearly won the Vezina last season but finished second to Bruins netminder Tim Thomas. This season, Rinne continued to dominate in net. He ranked second in starts (72 games) and minutes, posting a 2.39 GAA and lead the league in shots faced and saves. The dude is a beast. Your top point-scorers in the first round were Keith Yandle and Antoine Vermette with five points each for the Coyotes and for the Preds, Alexander Radulov, who also put up five. EASTERN CONFERENCENo. 1 New York Rangers vs. No. 7 Washington CapitalsThis series has all kinds of fun story lines, starting with the fact that both teams are likely exhausted after each needed seven games to get into the semifinals. Lundqvist, a Vezina Trophy finalist boasts a season featuring a 1.97 GAA, .930 save percentage and eight shutouts in 62 games. In the first-round series against the Sens, Lundqvist GAA dropped down to a stealth 1.70. The Swede doesn deserve all of the credit as the Rangers defense is spectacular, ranking fourth in the league in blocked shots and 17th in takeaways. On the other end of the ice we have the Caps rookie goaltender Braden Holtby who resembled Tim Thomas more than Tim Thomas did in the first round, stopping 233 of 248 shots hurled at him by the Bruins. It doubtful, but maybe Holtby will somehow out-Lundqvist Lundqvist in the same manner in which he did Thomas. As usual, all eyes will be on Ovechkin who led the Caps with 65 points in the regular season and five in the first round against the Bruins (2-3). Leading the Rangers in the regular season was Marian Gaborik with 76 points but in the first round, Brad Richards did the heavy lifting scoring-wise with five points (2-3) against the Bruins. The teams are well-matched offensively with the advantage going to the Rangers on defense. These teams split their regular season series 2-2, so take that for what it worth. I picking the Rangers over the Caps in seven. No. 6 New Jersey Devils vs. No. 5 Philadelphia Flyers This series is chalk full of scoring threats, solid goaltending and a few interesting personalities making the Devils/Flyers match up must-see TV. First of all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each of these teams beat the other twice as the visitor during the regular season. I just wish the TV networks would put a microphone on Brysgalov during the game and stream his audio feed live on another channel as it would probably be the most entertaining and perhaps nonsensical television next to Jerry Springer. Watching a near 40-year-old man get in and out of a full splits that quickly is mind-boggling. The question lies in whether or not the rest of the Devils can ease the load for the aging Brodeur. That won be an easy task as Claude Giroux ALONE notched 14 points in the first round of the playoffs, leading a potent offense against Pittsburgh. The Flyers destroyed the Penguins strong penalty kill with 12 power-play goals on 23 opportunities. The Devils were fantastic on the penalty kill during the regular season but faltered in the first round against the Panthers as Florida scored 8 power-play goals on 26 opportunities. If New Jersey allows Philly to repeat that first-round power play success, you can stick a fork in the Devils. The Flyers were running on all cylinders against Sidney Crosby and the Pens as young bucks Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier impressed while the oldie-but-goodie Jaromir Jagr, like Brodeur, makes 40 look good. Ilya Kovalchuck led New Jersey with 37 regular season goals and in assists, Patrik Elias padded the stat page with 54. Yet in the first round against the Panthers, Jersey young Travis Zajac had a breakout series with three goals and three assists in those seven games, placing him at 10th in first-round scoring. Not too shabby. Zajac is also really strong in faceoffs. If the Flyers are playing at 75 percent of what they were in the first round, I think they win this series with relative ease. Why would he, as Claiborne expected to be drafted early in the first round while Dallas was nearly halfway down in the draft order with the No. 14 pick overall. So when Claiborne answered his phone and realized Jerry Jones was unexpectedly on the line, (click on the video above to hear their conversation), the 22-year-old Louisiana native was absolutely stunned. looked back at my family, and they were like, is it? Claiborne told the press at Radio City Music Hall. I was like, Cowboys. Just to see the look on their face, it just melted me. voice of his new bosses melted Claiborne too, as you can hear the Jim Thorpe Award winner break down in tears while trying to digest the moment he had likely dreamed about since childhood. Between twitter and the media leaking information about picks before they happen, this is quite a remarkable conversation as we rarely get to see true, raw emotion at the draft these days. Congrats to Mr. Claiborne and to the Cowboys as well, who seem to have gambled on one grateful and hard-working young man.
A stellar 24-hours of baseball began with a star-studded, Hollywood-esque birthday party for Fenway Park as the Red Sox (and Yankees) celebrated the historic landmark centennial. The festivities were all flash and no substance as New York handily beat Boston 6-2, the visitors leaving not as much as a party favor for the host team. Still a 9-1 ballgame in the seventh inning, before any of us had time to contemplate a New York comeback, Fox switched it live coverage over to the White Sox game in Seattle as a perfect game was in the making. Those of us watching live were lucky enough to catch the last few outs as White Sox pitcher Phil Humbert threw a perfect game, only the 21st such feat in the history of major league baseball. The 29-year-old righty remained composed, coming back from the deficit to eventually strike out Saunders en route to a masterful perfect game. In those 11 minutes, the Boston bullpen allowed New York to load the bases giving Nick Swisher ample opportunity to hit a grand slam, which is exactly what he did. The comeback was officially on as Swisher slam put a dent in the lead (9-5), but no, the Yankees didn stop there. A three-run homer from Teixeira put the Yankees right back in the game as the visitors had clawed their way out of a 9-0 hole, scoring seven runs in the seventh inning, trailing only by one run, 9-8. I sure you know where this is going. Things only worsened for the home team in the eighth inning as the Yankees scored ANOTHER SEVEN RUNS to complete an epic comeback. The dichotomy of Humber perfection in Seattle and the perfect storm resulting in Boston unfathomable collapse was an emotionally bipolar experience. Contrary to popular East Coast-belief, the entire universe doesn care about your average Yankees-Red Sox series. If you don live out East,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], aren a fan of either team, or aren a baseball nut, a New York-Boston series a few weeks into the regular season isn that enticing. But a comeback from a 9-0 deficit is. And so is a perfect game, no matter the name or face of the pitcher. After the layers of cheering teammates were peeled off from on top of him, Humber was quickly ushered to the dugout area and a headset draped atop his head as the world was ready to hear from the pitcher immediately following his dominating display. Shaking and unable to grasp what he had just accomplished, Humber, coming off of Tommy John surgery, told the television audience, just so happy. There are so many good things that are happening right now…I got a little boy on the way, I just want to say hi to my wife back home, and you know I love you baby. That for you. Humber altered the record books, his performance the 18th no-hitter in White Sox franchise history and the third perfect game for Chicago. A few thousand miles away,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the scene at Fenway couldn have been more opposite as the heinous loss dropped the Red Sox to 4-10 on the season leaving those in the New England region frowning while those in Chicago, and even Seattle, smiled. The Yankees 15-9 victory also required a re-write of the record book as it marked the fifth time in franchise history in which New York has overcame a 9-run deficit, the third time against Boston alone. The last time the Sox surrendered a nine-run lead to the Yanks came in June, 1987. Saturday game tied the biggest comeback in Yankees history as well. Ironically, the Red Sox were the first team to provide any real regular season intrigue as Valentine got the pot to a slow boil after publicly criticizing Kevin Youkilis, but that was small potatoes compared to Saturday stunner. The fire and ice we experienced Saturday left fans wanting more, which is exactly the kickstart baseball needed in April.
Well isn this precious? Not only will Eli Manning soon share a stadium with Tim Tebow, but the Super Bowl-winning Giants quarterback will also welcome the Jets rival into his New Jersey neighborhood!Various news outlets reported that Tebow, the Jets recently-acquired backup quarterback chose a residence not in the so-called golf course community where his teammate QB1 Mark Sanchez lives, but instead, decided to shack up a mere two blocks away from Manning in Hoboken,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], NJ. Aside from now living in the same hood, these two might have more in common than we expect. After all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both Manning and Tebow seem like the sports equivalent of a Bill Gates or Mark Zuckerberg, as they were probably that goofy-looking kid growing up who blossomed into a talented, mega-celebrity as an adult. Both played in the SEC and have won two championships,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tebow at Florida, Manning with the Giants. This situation has written all over it! Can can you see it? Late-night hangouts comprised of popcorn and pillow fights between football talk? Perhaps Manning and Tebow will watch film of the 49ers together as the Jets face San Francisco in Week 4, the Giants in Week 6? The boys could easily bond over the harsh New York media and the enormous pressure both have faced. Manning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unfairly compared to brother Peyton throughout his career career, could commiserate with Tebow who wasn even expected to have a career playing quarterback in the NFL. Perhaps the church-going Tebow could babysit young Ava from time to time, allowing Eli and Abby to have an occasional night out on the town? Tebow could be the Mannings Manny. Even better, Manning and Tebow could spend sleepless nights competing against each other in Madden, taking turns playing as themselves while the other plays as Tom Brady and the Patriots. That sounds like fun!
