The Red Shoes and Human Interest Story

The Red Shoes is a wicked show, in both senses of the word. Cornwall's Kneehigh Theatre has adapted Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale of a girl doomed to dance in her red shoes until she can no longer bear it. What happens after that is so gruesome it would probably be censored on prime-time TV, but Kneehigh's version is fast-paced and extremely funny, using pantomime and knock-about farce without losing the underlying chill. The most gruesome bit - well, you simply need to go and see how brilliantly they handle it.
Patrycja Kujawska is stunning as The Girl,[url=http://duveticaaustraliaoutlet.halod.com/][b]duvetica down jackets sale[/b][/url], a tiny, wild-eyed figure who looks as if she's stepped out of a Rumanian orphanage. Director Emma Rice talks about "the power and necessity of folk tales. They can guide, calm and comfort us as we tiptoe through the minefield of human experience." Indeed The Red Shoes is strangely comforting, especially since Rice has fiddled with the ending and the girl gets her revenge. But you'll have to see it.
Human Interest Story (which made its world premiere at PIAF) is dark in a different way,[url=http://billigeparajumpersjackendamen.albirank.net/][b]parajumpers long bear herren[/b][/url], an ambitious exploration by Australian choreographer Lucy Guerin of the media barrage that assaults us all. How many people (usually over forty, admittedly) ask themselves why Twitter and Facebook dominate our lives? And don't we all suspect the 24-hour cycle of grim news makes us feel powerless or, worse, bored?
Guerin's six dancers are loose-limbed balls of energy; they belong to the generation that Tweets madly and is glued to Master Chef while making their own scratch meal. In the show's early moments, the group cosies up on a sofa in front of a super-sized TV; in unison, they recite news items that give the late Michael Jackson's tawdry life equal billing with world starvation. They hilariously mimic the head tilts and voice inflections of newsreaders.
When they swing the TV screen around to the audience, we see the dancers' own lives packaged up in neat sound bites,[url=http://billigtmonclerdunjackastockholmrea.olimx.com/][b]Billigt Moncler Dunjacka Stockholm Rea[/b][/url], as 'human interest' stories read by SBS news presenter Anton Enus.
But the show soon enters more sombre, slightly obscure territory. A slight quibble with this show is the underlying premise that more media is bad. If the content of Twitter, or Facebook, or even nightly news bulletins seem trivial in our Australian lives, they are the very tools that young Egyptians have embraced in their struggle to organise.
