49ers try rookies Colin Jones and Bruce Miller at new positions in practice
SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Francisco 49ers praised versatilty throughout training camp and on Wednesday, they took that to a whole new level.
Safety Colin Jones was asked to play wide receiver during passing drills and fullback Bruce Miller saw action at both inside and outside linebacker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. "He was a defensive player in college and we drafted him to be a fullback and he's done well there as a fullback," said Fangio. "But again, when you start picking 53 out of 90, and then having to suit 46 out of the 53, anybody's versatility for those last few spots is a feather in their cap and may get them on the field. Because he has defensive experience,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we wanted to see if he had any chance to helping us on the defensive side of the ball."
Making the decision for both these players to move to the opposite side of the ball was a mid-day decision. Both Jones and Miller were switching in and out of red offense and white defense jerseys throughout practice. C Jonathan Goodwin has been getting more reps at center with Adam Snyder at RG. Snyder started the day off at the starting center spot with Chilo Rachal to his right. But overall,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it still looks like the team is favoring Snyder as their center.
Fangio said that both CBs Tarell Brown and Tramaine Brock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], both whom have seen a lot of first team reps, are both in the hunt to be in the final roster spots of the secondary.
Newly signed QB Josh McCown met with the media and talked about his decision to come to the 49ers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. He played sparingly during practice but did complete a couple throws in drills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Fangio said that NT Isaac Sopoaga was a little rusty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but believes he'll be fine. In Fangio's eyes, the team has four players that can be starters on the defensive line. Including Sopoaga, we can assume that he's also referring to Justin Smith, Ray McDonald and Ricky Jean Francois.
