Ahmadinejad calls on Iranian girls to marry at 16
"We should take the chronilogical age of marriage for boys to 20 and for girls to about 16 and 17," Mr. Ahmadinejad said in remarks reported in Sunday newspapers in Tehran. "The marriage age for boys has reached 26 as well as for girls to 24, and there's no reason for this."
The comments would be the latest effort through the Iranian president to bolster the nation's population of 75 million. He has said Iran can sustain 150 million citizens, and also, since July has supported a course of financial incentives for each newborn born.
A U-turn for family planning in IranSuch practices are a U-turn of widely praised birth control practices in Iran. Seeking more "soldiers of Islam" following the 1979 Islamic revolution,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], family planning centers from the pro-West Shah were removed, within the words of 1 historian, "on the causes that Islam and Iran needed a sizable population."
But as the population exploded by as much as 3,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].9 per cent each year - among the highest on the planet - it became clear to Iran's leaders that such growth was unsustainable. By 1986 the populace had jumped inside a decade from 33 million to nearly 50 million.
Family planning courses became necessary for newlyweds, contraception services emerged in the most remote villages, and sterilization procedures for males and women were provided free of charge. The main vasectomy clinic in south Tehran once painted its parking area with green arrows to lead the way.
"It's so that clients can find us without asking, when they are embarrassed," Fereydoun Forouhary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], director from the clinic, told the computer monitor in 1999.
FROM MONITOR ARCHIVES: An unlikely model for family planningSubsidies were cut to large households,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and regime policy held that that the "ideal" Islamic family had two children. Condoms were subsidized, using the Islamic Republic's state-owned factory producing 45 million annually through the late 1990s, in 30 different shapes, colors and flavors. By 2001 it had been producing 70 million.
"No other country did such great work in such a small amount of time," Mohamed Mosleh-Uddin, the Tehran associated with the UN Population Fund,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], told the Monitor in 1999. He explained all of those other third world took "30 to 4 decades to get this far."
"Three actors have worked together: great religious support, political commitment, and a a healthy body infrastructure,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Mr. Mosleh-Uddin. "In no other country are all these components there."
Why Ahmadinejad wants a baby boomCritics of Ahmadinejad's efforts complain that Iran's deepening economic problems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from unemployment and inflation to lack of resources, will only worsen having a swelling population. Currently some two-thirds from the human population is under 35 years of age.
Already the federal government is anxious about its intends to imminently remove subsidies on everything from food and fuel to electricity. The plan provides citizens having a $40 per month cash payment instead, though public complaints are increasing that the money will not bridge the gap.
Several layers of UN, American and European sanctions over Iran's nuclear program are contributing to economic uncertainty.
But Ahmadinejad has favored a growing population for years. After at least a year at work, at the end of 2006,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he required a baby boom.
"I am against stating that two youngsters are enough. Our country has a lot of capacity … for a lot of children to develop inside it," he was quoted as saying in the Guardian newspaper at the time. "Westerners have got problems. Because their population growth is negative, they're worried and fear that if our population increases, we will overcome them."
The reformist Etemaad-e Melli newspaper said the cost would be high for such "ill-considered" comments, the Guardian reported.
"[Ahmadinejad] stresses the necessity of population growth and the triumph of Iran over western governments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ignoring the truth that what results in such triumph isn't population size but knowledge, technology,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], wealth, welfare and security."
