An analysis of salaries for college basketball coaches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
To look for the total pay packages of NCAA tournament coaches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], USA TODAY requested all forms of 2009-10 season compensation for that head men's basketball coach and/or acquired the school's federal taxes or any other state disclosure data.
USA TODAY obtained at least some good info on basically five schools, which are private. shoe and apparel contracts, support organization). Where some other income report is unavailable, a coach's salary might be undercounted by $200,000-$500,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 or even more in that category alone.
Schools that provided contract information were given the chance to review their figures.
USA TODAY was assisted in its data collection and analysis by students from the Indiana University School of Journalism's National Sports Journalism Center,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], led by center director Timothy A. Franklin and adjunct professor Robyn Schuster.
Explanations of compensation categories:
Guaranteed income: Includes base salary,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], annualized deferred payments, annuities and contractual expense accounts (most coaches have expenses covered per university policy; a few have set amounts. Within the few cases when it applies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], housing allowances are treated as expense accounts.) Additionally, it includes television,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], radio, Internet deals; apparel contracts, public relations, camps along with other income that the university guarantees. Incentive payments, bonuses and benefits are not included.
Non-guaranteed income: any athletically related income earned by the coach from outside the university. It may include a shoe/apparel contract that goes straight to the coach, speeches, camps or other money sources that the university doesn't guarantee, for example foundations. In some cases, this might change from year to year.
Annual total: Guaranteed and non-guaranteed income combined. It reflects what the coach earned in the past year, whatever the source. Bonuses, one-time payments, the need for tickets, luxury suites, cars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], travel, country club memberships and standard university benefits such as health care and standard retirement aren't included.
One-time bonuses: Additional amounts already paid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or scheduled to become paid over lifetime of contract. Covers signing bonuses, conditional/deferred payments for example those for fulfilling prescribed portions of contracts, also known as longevity payments, along with other specially designated amounts but not performance bonuses.
Tournament max: Amount the coach can cumulatively earn based on his team's performance in the NCAA tournament. (Most private schools are organized as tax-exempt organizations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which are necessary to file each year with the IRS. The return lists the organization's highest-paid employees. At some public schools, the athletics department or a support organization is also organized as a non-profit. USA TODAY used the most recent filing available,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], most covering a fiscal year ending in spring or summer 2008. The return includes all income paid through the school or support organization, including benefits, perks and bonuses that might have been earned; the return does not break up those figures by income category. It doesn't include income paid by other sources.)
Bonuses awarded on discretionary basis not included.
