Christian Louboutin tells Cinderella story to Jeanne Beker
PARIS-Attention shoe-lovers: Prepare to drool! I had the privilege of taking a private tour of Christian Louboutin's atelier recently, and if all the trademark red soles, colourful croc skins, and sky high stilettos weren't enough to put stars in my eyes, I only had to peruse the shelves lined with boxes bearing the names of some of Louboutin's most celebrated clients. From Janet Jackson, Madonna and Tina Turner to Sarah Jessica Parker, Dita Von Teese, and Daphne Guinness, world-class fashionistas flock to Christian Louboutin like bees to honey, and many of his die-hard customers get the couture treatment, as evidenced by the many individualized shoe lasts (models) I saw dangling in one corner of the studio.
But most charming of all was watching one gentleman hand-stud a pair of high heels, Swarovski crystal by Swarovski crystal, and then delicately attach a pair of exquisite crystal butterflies to the lace shoes themselves.
This particular fantasy footwear was one of 20 pairs of modern-day Cinderella-inspired slippers commissioned by Disney Studios, which will be offered as rare prizes to 20 "real" women around the world with the release of the Cinderella: Diamond Edition Blu-ray Combo Pack this fall. The release of the animated Disney classic will also ensure that every little girl falls in love with Louboutin, as the designer himself is featured in a charming short film that will be on the DVD, and co-starring some very chic little animated mice.
The collaboration is a fantasy project for Louboutin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who began sketching shoes in his early teens, and apprenticed in the dressing rooms of the Folies Bergère, where he was inspired by all the burlesque dancers. By the early '90s, Louboutin, having worked for legends like Charles Jourdan and Roger Vivier, opened his own Paris boutique, with Princess Caroline of Monaco his first customer. Today, Christian Louboutin is one of the world's most revered shoe designers. And while I can attest to the fact that many of his shoes may be far from comfortable, they never fail to lift spirits, draw attention,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and make grand fashion statements. I chatted with Christian Louboutin at the historic Palais Brongniart, a setting fit for his Cinderella story.
Q: You've been passionate about shoes since you were a little kid. Did you ever dream that one day you'd be designing a slipper for Cinderella?
A: Well, over the past 20 years since I started my company, I have designed some shoes which I felt fell into "the Cinderella Syndrome" . . . meaning that a shoe would appear in my store and disappear almost immediately because it was one of a kind. So there was a kind of idea there, not really of a Cinderella slipper, but a precious shoe which was made out of very limited material - fabric that I'd only be able to make one or two pairs out of. These shoes were so special, that a customer would arrive, see them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and snap them up right away. So the idea of "rarity" has always been at the back of my mind. But actually designing a Cinderella slipper seemed beyond my possibilities.
Q: There's a great transformational quality that your shoes have, just like Cinderella's slippers had: They actually helped transform her into a princess! Tell me about the power of a shoe, and what a well-designed shoe can do for a woman.
A: I've seen those transformations happen so many times in my shop. I watch a person try on a pair of my shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and suddenly, starting at the foot, the shoe starts to change the whole body of the person, her whole attitude. They really do end up with a smile! It's so funny to see how strong this phenomenon is. I remember watching one woman who arrived at the store, and tried on a pair of my shoes, and they gave her a completely different sense of herself. She looked at herself in the mirror and was really pleased with herself. She was so happy, which of course always makes me very happy.
Q: There's also something about wearing Louboutins that puts you in a different kind of place. These shoes really indicate that you're a woman of style. People see that red sole,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they know "That one's got Louboutins!" How does it feel to have turned your brand into something so iconic and meaningful in women's lives?
A: Well, it's always great when you're doing something you really love and you can share that with people - share your passion, your enthusiasm. It's a wonderful thing. I just started making these really beautiful shoes for one store, and then it eventually just started to grow. I never had another goal other than making beautiful shoes for women. So I couldn't be happier.
Q: In the early days, you were just making shoes for burlesque dancers. That was your big fantasy. But now, designing shoes for real women, it's as though you've turned every woman into a bit of a performance artist, when she walks down the street.
Q: Does it get more difficult to create fantastic shoes, the further you go along? Because it's as though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Wow! He's done it all! Where's he going to go next?" Does it become more and more of a challenge to outdo yourself?
A: I never think if my work as a challenge. I think of my work as a big pleasure, and I think that's what happens when all your expression goes into your designs. So if you get huge pleasure out of your work, and do it with a lot of enthusiasm, that's what people definitely see and feel. The only challenge is not to completely repeat yourself, and to continually revamp and reinvent, and go with new designs. If you're passionate about the world and if you really look closely at everything around you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], each thing can be transformed into a shoe, or into a part of a shoe. So knock on wood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I never have problem coming up with new designs.
Q: Is there such a thing where less is more in shoes? Because these days, it seems that more is more. Women always want more shoes, and some feel you can never have too many pairs in your wardrobe. Do you think some people are too shoe obsessed?
A: It would be unfair to me to say that people are too shoe obsessed - just like there's no heel that's too high for me. I perfectly understand the obsession with shoes. I myself am pretty obsessed. I have a few hundred pairs of shoes in general, because I've been collecting shoes for a long time.
Q: Why do you think, in this day and age, that the shoe has become so iconic, such objects of desire?
A: Well, a woman carries her clothes. But the shoe carries the woman. So it's definitely an element of fashion that gives your entire body a different type of language. There's a whole radiation that starts at the feet, which completely invades your personality, your language,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], your movement. The shoe has this transformational power. Different types of shoes can change your persona, and people are quite sensitive to that
Q: Some do feel that shoes are a better high than drugs! So,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let's have a look at your modern-day Cinderella slipper. Of course, Cinderella's slippers were made of glass, but you give your slippers this translucent quality by using lace. And what about these gorgeous crystal butterflies they're adorned with?
A: The butterfly is significant for the Cinderella shoe because butterflies are first caterpillars … these tiny creatures that form into these beautiful insects that take flight. So there's the idea of transformation here, just like with Cinderella - a young girl who dreams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and realizes her fantasy of becoming a princess and living happily ever after. I wanted to evolve the story even further,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and show Cinderella becoming free,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just like a butterfly. In the short film we shot for Disney, I play a designer who gets his first pang of inspiration the moment he sees a little butterfly land on Cinderella. That's when he starts sketching. That's actually very true to my life, where I just see these small, ephemeral moments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and just thinking about them makes me start sketching a specific shoe.
Q: One of the things I love about you is that you always manage to keep your inner child alive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. That's probably why you have such a beautiful imagination!
