Drugs firm offers cheap vaccine to developing countries as chief says people should come before profits
Drugs companies must behave 'in step with society' by reducing their prices to help improve healthcare in developing countries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], according the head of one of the world's biggest pharmaceuticals businesses.
Andrew Witty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chief executive of GlaxoSmithKline (GSK),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the industry too often acts 'as though it is detached from society' and should start putting people before profits to increase public trust.
He made the comments as his company revealed a change in its business model that will see the implementation of a tiered pricing structure - with drug prices aligned to a country's ability to pay.
He said: 'To be successful in the long term,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we have to operate in a way that is in step with society and its expectations.
'Today public trust in all big institutions, including governments and business, is challenged.
'I believe industry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the pharmaceutical sector, sometimes hasn't helped itself by operating as if we were detached from society.'
Mr Witty said GSK would be offering its rotavirus vaccine to developing countries for a fraction of its Western market price.
The Rotarix vaccine, which prevents diarrhoeal disease - a deadly bug responsible for killing more than half a million children annually - will be made available to poor nations for £1.50 a dose rather than £30.
Profits made in developed countries will be partly used by GSK to subsidise any losses made in their developing counterparts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'I hope this will enable millions of children to receive this important vaccine,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], saving countless lives in the future,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' added the chief executive to The Times.
Mr Witty said the move was 'not a gimmick or one off philanthropic gesture part of a concerted strategy to change our business model'.
He added: 'Specifically,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are aligning our commercial success with doing what we can to tackle the healthcare needs of people in all countries, including the poorest.'
Andrew Mitchell, the International Development Secretary, said the Government and the pharmaceutical industry are "locked together" in providing greater assistance in preventing the spreads of diseases in the world's poorest countries.
'I hope that the entire industry will follow the path down which Andrew Witty and GSK is blazing a trail,' he said.
Business model: Mr Witty said offering Rotarix at a knock-down price was 'not a gimmick or one off philanthropic gesture'
Political leaders will meet at the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) conference in London next Monday to discuss how to generate sufficient funds to ensure children in the world's poorest countries receive the vaccines they need.
It is hoped they can raise more than £2.25 billion for immunisation programmes over the next four years, saving the lives of an estimated four million underprivileged children.
Gavi is expected to announce several new commitments from other pharmaceuticals manufacturers to reduce pricing of other vaccines which protect against deadly diseases.
Save the Children chief executive Justin Forsyth said: 'GSK's price reduction for its new diarrhoea vaccine is a landmark move,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], potentially saving the lives of hundreds of thousands of children.'
Diarrhoea kills more of the world's poorest children than Aids, measles and malaria combined, he said.
'We now have the prospect of dramatically cutting those needless deaths, by immunising against the virus which causes so many of them.
'It's important that Gavi now uses this to spur other vaccine producers to reduce prices and work to foster greater competition amongst producers to drive prices down even further and help even more children.'
There are many and a growing number of companies that put purpose before profits to create value for all stakeholders. Worth reading Sisodia et al "Firms of Endearment" and Hollender Breen's "The Responsibility Revolution" for lots of inspiring cases. More of us are asking "what is the reason for this company operating". If it's only for shareholder profit and we can't see what the contribution is to society,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then we're choosing to buy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], work, and invest elsewhere. Take a look at M IKEA, Whole Foods Market,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Costco, Organic Valley, and lots of others. We can choose who we spend our money or working hours with.
What a load of cynics we have become. I think this is a really positive step forward, albeit a small one. Hopefully other companies will follow suit. As for forcing rich people to give to charity - have people really become that greeedy and selfish that they are unprepared to donate a small proportion of their wealth to stop another human being dying??? And as for charities are there to do that it may be best to look at the bigger picture - are you aware that UNICEF's annual budget is the same as the govt spends on Defense(otherwise known as war) in 4 hours!!
These drugs will no doubt save millions of lives and then what? How will these extra millions be fed and watered? The population on the planet is growing at an unsustainable rate. Resources are finite. There is an awful dichotomy between humanitarianism and practicality that has to be addressed. It is a terrible thing to see a sick, starving baby when you know a few pence could save it but to save it for what? To live a miserable life as an adult in a drought-ridden, over-crowded, war-torn country. I don't know the answer but it seems it needs more than a few pills to solve the third world's - and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ultimately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], our - problems.相关的主题文章:
