San Francisco Stanford Cardinal Basketball,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Former Stanford star Brooke Smith apparently has made the regular-season roster of the Phoenix Mercury of the WNBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she will be wearing what could be a trend-setting uniform in the season opener on Saturday.
The Mercury had not officially named its opening-game roster,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it waived three players this week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including center Alison Bales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to reduce the roster to 10 players,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one under the WNBA limit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then signed one player to reach the league's new roster limit of 11. Presumably,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that will be the roster for the opener against San Antonio on Saturday, and Smith,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has been vying for a frontcourt spot,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is still on the team. She got extensive playing time in both exhibition games, and although she did not score much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Smith was a productive rebounder.
It would be her second season with the Mercury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the first wearing the team's new uniform. In a ground-breaking arrangement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Mercury this week agreed to a three-year deal with LifeLock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an identity-theft company headquartered in Arizona. The LifeLock name will replace the "Phoenix" and "Mercury" labels on both the front and back of the team's regular-season jerseys,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a small team logo on the front being the only team identification. The LifeLock name will also be displayed on the players' warmups and on the home court. The three-year deal, which reportedly will pay the team at least $1 million per year, is similar to the corporate-branding deals common in basketball overseas and in soccer abroad and in Major League Soccer in this country. But it is the first for the WNBA or the NBA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and there are indications that other WNBA teams, namely the New York Liberty,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], will make similar deals in the near future.
Whether this is a troublesome sign for pro sports or just an inevitable one is debatable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is one that may be necessary for the WNBA, especially in this difficult economic environment. The NBA has no immediate plans to add such corporate logos to uniforms,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but the NFL has considered the idea,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and major-league baseball teams displayed corporate sponsorship on their uniforms during preseason games in Japan.
