"We certainly lost a great man today,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Jeannine Abate Campbell of her 90-year-old grandfather, who owned Novelty Shoe Rebuilders on Yonge St., where he built up the heels of DeVito's boots to make him taller.
"He was in the centre of our family my entire life. Abate started at Novelty as a delivery boy at the age of 14 and stayed to build a reputation that was as solid and long-lasting as the shoes he repaired,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"He thought it was a sign of weakness to miss a day from work," said store manager Robert Perry,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who knew him for 25 years and jokes that "most marriages don't last that long."
Abate dyed and repaired shoes for Mila Mulroney, Kim Campbell and Anne Murray, who was one of his favourite customers.
"He's the kind of guy who would often stay late and even come in on Sundays because he thought when he promised the customer the job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is no excuse," said Perry.
The shop did work for all of the big theatre productions in Toronto, including Miss Saigon, Crazy for You,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ThePhantom of the Opera,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Les Misérables and Show Boat.
The shop could fix anything to do with shoes, including adding special material so actors don't slip on stage, dying shoes to match costumes or making actors taller by building up the heels of shoes. The store currently does work for television shows So You Think You Can Dance and Warehouse 13.
As Abate got older,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one of his favourite occupations was to recover shoes with fabric for celebrities. "He took pride in that as he matured in age,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Perry.
Novelty's reputation was so widespread that the Bata Shoe Museum refers callers to the store. Novelty "came highly recommended to us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Ada Hopkins, a conservator at the museum.
Abate was born above his parents' fruit store on Yonge St. in 1922. He was married to Margaret Abate for 68 years and only retired when her health started to go downhill. She died in 2009,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"He had a broken heart for those last three years,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Campbell, but kept going with the love of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Abate has a daughter and three sons, one of whom passed away. He has more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Campbell said her grandfather worked hard all his life and took side jobs fixing transistor radios and cars,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and repairing refrigerators at the CNE with Mel Lastman.
