Boise State fires athletic director Gene Bleymaier as school faces sanctions,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]

The NCAA hasn't announced whether even tougher sanctions will be imposed from the university. School administrators have said they feel the self-imposed penalties, which include a three-year probation period and steps to boost its compliance office, will satisfy the NCAA.
"I was relayed through President Kustra that his decision is predicated on the confidence level he believes he needs to have as president in the university's compliance operations throughout an NCAA probationary period," Bleymaier said.
The football sanctions are part of a broader penalty package put in place by university officials for violations that also involve women's and men's tennis, and track and field. An NCAA inquiry as well as an internal investigation by the school identified 22 infractions and an absence of institutional controls essential to fully adhere to rules governing collegiate athletic programs.
The university's 1,500-page reaction to the NCAA details a number of "secondary" violations by football staff throughout a four-year period. Petersen, who had been named head coach in 2005, said he'd continually be grateful for the opportunity given to him by Bleymaier.

Bleymaier was raised in Los angeles but gone to live in Boise like a senior in high school. He returned to California to go to college and obtain a law degree. He was back in Boise as well as on campus almost 30 years ago, and took over as athletic director annually later. He guided the Broncos through their transition to Division I-A in football in 1996, a set of stadium expansions as well as their rapid rise to prominence within the last decade.
