Cheap fares and added extras on earlybird flights to Europe as competition heats up
Travel experts said slow forward bookings and the growth of Asian and Middle Eastern carriers targeting Australians heading to Europe had led to lower than usual earlybird fares for the next Northern Hemisphere summer and more creative marketing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Garuda Indonesia is offering fares from Sydney to Amsterdam from $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],062 return and Melbourne to Amsterdam from $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],034 return for people who book by the end of next month for travel from January to June next year.
Earlier this week AirAsia had fares to London's Gatwick Airport from $1172 from Perth and $1314 from Melbourne,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while Singapore Airlines is offering 30kg luggage allowances when you book flights to Barcelona and hotel stays in Singapore for $1 per person.
Peter Harbison,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from the Centre for Pacific Aviation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said the airlines were trying to generate cash flow at an otherwise quiet time of year between school holiday periods.
"They compare what's happened in the past with what's happening now and if there's any indication that the forward bookings are slower than previous years they want to get them sold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' he said.
"If the economy is looking a bit soft and forward bookings aren't looking so good they want to get them in now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It's a pretty aggressive,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], competitive market out there.
"You can choose any one of 50 airlines and they will take you to Europe.''
Flight Centre general manager marketing Colin Bowman said the Garuda fare to Amsterdam was the cheapest he had seen for a ``very,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], very long time'', with the airline keen to promote flights beyond Indonesia.
"Some of the Asian carriers had fares around the mid $1300s and $1400s,'' he said.
"Flying at peak season these are great value,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].''
Mr Bowman said some Asian airlines were also offering side trips to places such as Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia for as little as $1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It's encouraging people to actually visit the destination rather than just fly through the airport,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],'' he said.
"They're looking for an edge and a way to create a different perception in the marketplace and attract different travellers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
While the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission had guidelines that there had to be a certain number of seats available at the advertised price,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mr Bowman said the earlier you booked sale fares the more likely you would get them at the cheapest price.
