Public buses in S. Korean city get their electric power from the road
GUMI, South Korea, Aug. 7 () -- South Korea says it has hit the "on" button for a road that can recharge electric vehicles while they drive over it.The 7.5-mile route in the town of Gumi, running from a train station to the downtown district, is the first of its kind in the world, its developers say.Two public buses are already using the technology on the route and there are plans to add 10 more by 2015, officials said."It's quite remarkable that we succeeded with the OLEV [online electric vehicle] project so that buses are offering public transportation services to passengers," research leader Dong-Ho Cho at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology said. The buses receive 100 kilowatts of electricity at an 85 percent power transmission efficiency rate while maintaining a 6.7-inch air gap between the underbody of the vehicle and the road surface, an institute release reported.Power comes from the electrical cables buried under the surface of the road, hollister clearance, creating magnetic fields a receiving device installed on the underbody of the vehicle converts into electricity."This is certainly a turning point for OLEV to become more commercialized and widely accepted for mass transportation in our daily living, hollister coupons," Dong-Ho Cho said.
