'Men of a Certain Age' recap
On TNT "Men of the Certain Age," the magic is not the stuff that happens. It how are you affected between what goes on that means something. It about smirks and glances and little jokes and daily rituals that ultimately equal to a much bigger picture.
That may be why the show doesn obtain the ratings it deserves. Many watch television to escape life or live in someone else for awhile. Fans of "Men of a Certain Age" are an introspective bunch who obsess over the never-ending quest for happiness simply to understand that originates from within in support of the lucky understand how to think it is.
The 3 characters -- Ray Romano Joe, Andre Braugher Owen and Scott Bakula Terry -- represent three different types. Joe is a recently divorced dad attempting to adjust to single life and struggling with some demons including a gambling problem. Terry is a perpetual man-child that has spent a lot of his life in a haze of pot and who's beginning to understand that time is working against him. Owen is the stable one, having a happy family along with a successful career managing a car dealership. Underneath the surface,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he struggles to interrupt free from his father large shadow and become their own man.
Like life, an episode of of a Certain Age" veers from laughs to tears in the blink of the eye. Often the three characters turns playing the heavy after which comic relief.
On Wednesday show, it was Owen who appeared to be assigned with supplying the laughs. Having seen some nasty comments about his sales force online for his car dealerships, he puts hidden cameras in the cars to determine for himself how his team measures up.
It not really a pretty picture.
Salesmen are talking on their cellphones, eating, taking their shoes off during test drives as well as making jokes about a potential buyer weight. Owen is horrified, although his wife, Melissa, declares it her new favorite show.
Owen uses his knowledge of how his crew is acting to lay down the law. He doesn get around to using the cameras out, though, and learns that Bruce, who has been with dealership for 30 years, takes kickbacks. Stunned and saddened, he would go to his father, Owen Sr., who is reluctant to do what's to become done leaving it up to Owen to deal with the problem. Owen tries to handle things with grace until his father finds his own anger in regards to a loyal employee stealing and orders Bruce to hit the road.
While Owen handles his sloppy sales staff and thieving employee, Joe continues to be playing bookie. He even assumes a new client, a man who works in an electronics store whose $5,000 bet has Joe nervous about covering.
The gambling is actually starting to have a toll on Joe. He ruining at work and much more concerned about his bets than he's his kids. It even sapped his sexual interest because he basically pushes his on-again, off-again gal pal Michelle away, which no sane man would do.
"Leading quite the small double life here aren you," Michelle says to him, adding "You like Robert De Niro in "Casino."
Once the guy who made the big bet loses and can pay off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Joe doesn get sound advice. He really wants to play the tough guy and get the money, however it just not in him. When he would go to confront the gambler, he met having a story that sounds familiar involving a busted marriage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cheap apartment and desperation. Perhaps simply because if he keeps track of the bookie biz,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he be wherever he was when his marriage disintegrated, Joe hangs it up.
Terry, whose every day life is often full of angst and frustration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is really happy. He got Erin back and taking her everywhere, even going to the diner, much to the chagrin of Joe, Owen and the waitress Terry had been with prior to reuniting with Erin.
"She cool, we never defined things,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Terry says when Joe and Owen question the logic of bringing Erin to the restaurant where another person he dated works. He oblivious to Laura dirty looks and plate slamming, and Joe and Owen can get a refill on their coffee. "Forget her,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dude," Owen tells Joe when the latter could possibly get Laura attention.
Terry is infatuated with Erin and seeking too hard to create everything perfect. His plans for any romantic dinner get snarled in traffic and he ends up needing to race home so she can get to a bathroom. Unfortunately, he breaks her key off in the door and she does something which she probably hadn done since she was Five years old. Since Terry took her out in an automobile from Owen dealership, everything is caught on camera for Owen and Melissa to look at later.
Erin reassures Terry that while she jilted him once,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it won happen again. That not good enough for Terry, who tells her he now really wants to define things and asks her to live with him.
There are two episodes left within the show summer run and its future is far from defined. One hopes that TNT will look beyond the ratings and choose that it has enough other hits in "The Closer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," "Rizzoli Isles" to warrant keeping this gem around longer.
