Unfussy pub is a gem
It was a warm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sunny afternoon and we were ambling along the glorious narrow country lanes of Swaledale just a stone's throw from Cumbria and an easy drive for a weekend break.
Swaledale is almost a hidden gem,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], particularly at its western end where the road winds down the valley from Kirkby Stephen.
The 17th-century Punch Bowl looks to all intents and purposes like a traditional country pub but inside there's none of your low-beamed ceilings or horse brasses. Rather this is a straightforward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unfussy pub with a bar and restaurant which have been completely refurbished by Dales craftsmen using local wood and stone.
Its key feature is a solid oak bar made by Robert 'the Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen from Kilburn in North Yorkshire with the firm's trademark mouse carved into the woodwork,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Both the bar and restaurant are warm and friendly with lashings of antique pine and wonderful views across the valley of the River Swale,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
We arrived in warm sunshine which allowed us to sit outside the Punch Bowl with a couple of pints of Black Sheep ale before dinner.
There on the patio we chatted to some of the other customers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many of them walkers. Low Row is near the Pennine Way and close to the mid-point of Alfred Wainwright's Coast-to-Coast walk which makes the Punch Bowl an ideal watering hole for those in need of a little sustenance.
If it's food you are after you are onto a winner here. The Punch Bowl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], under the ownership of Charles and Stacy Cody,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], serves excellent cuisine redolent of meals in much pricier restaurants. For starters I had lamb kofta with spiced tomato salsa while my companion chose the spiced mackerel with lentils - both were delicious.
For mains I went for the fish which was grilled fillet of sea bream with spring greens and sauce vierge,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. This time the friend opted for meat - Thai slow-cooked belly of pork with ginger and chilli on egg noodles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Both courses were stunning and I have to say as good if not better than meals I have eaten with many stars after their names,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Soon lulled by the unhurried pace,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fresh air and of course an excellent bottle of wine from the Punch Bowl's cellar it was clearly time for bed.
Our room was bright and comfortable with a wonderful bed from which you could gaze over the valley,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A fantastic night's sleep followed broken only by the bleating of sheep as dawn broke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Bliss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
