Two clinical strikes from Fabio Quagliarella kept Italy on
course for a place at UEFA EURO 2008 as the world champions beat
Lithuania 2-0 in a Group B qualifying match here on Wednesday.
Starting his first match for the
Azzurri, Quagliarella netted twice in the first half as
the Italians chalked up their fifth consecutive win of the campaign
to maintain second place behind France.
Italy were far from impressive in Saturday's narrow 2-1
victory away to the Faroe Islands, a country ranked 185th in the
world.
But they survived a test of character against the spirited
Lithuanians with their defence - marshalled superbly by captain
Fabio Cannavaro - rock solid and Sampdoria striker Quagliarella in
scintillating form.
In the night's other matches France, who Italy beat on
penalties in last year's World Cup final, defeated Georgia 1-0
while third-placed Scotland beat the Faroe Islands 2-0.
France are on 18 points after seven matches, followed by Italy
on 16 [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and the Scots on 15. Ukraine are in fourth spot on 12 points
but have a game in hand on the top three.
The top two teams in the group will qualify for EURO 2008, which

The Italians next play France on home soil [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] on September 8 before
playing away to Ukraine four days later.
Italy coach Roberto Donadoni made five changes to the side which
started against the Faroes.
Fit-again defender Gianluca Zambrotta came in for Max Tonetto at
left-back, while midfielders Gennaro Gattuso and Aimo Diana made
way for Daniele De Rossi and Simone Perrotta.
Strikers Tommaso Rocchi and Alessandro Del Piero were dropped
and replaced by Quagliarella and Antonio Di Natale, with the pair
both deployed as wingers to flank lone forward Filippo Inzaghi,
scorer of both of Italy's goals against the Faroes.
Perrotta almost put through his own net in the seventh minute
when trying to clear a left-wing corner, his mistimed header
flashing past the post.
The Roma midfielder was then responsible for Italy's first
attempt on goal, his diving header comfortably gathered by Paulius
Gribauskas.
Another Perrotta header cleared the bar before Gianluigi Buffon
came to Italy's rescue, his outstretched fingers repelling
Mantas Savenas' low drive on the half hour.
That save was to prove crucial as the Italians made the
breakthrough seconds later.
Quagliarella drove at the heart of the Lithuania defence, and as
they backed off, he unleashed a left-footed shot which took a
slight deflection on its way past Gribauskas.
Buffon kept Italy's lead intact with a point-blank save to
deny Mindaugas Kalonas before Quagliarella struck again on the
stroke of half time.
The 23-year-old striker found himself in space as the [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ball
bounced on the edge of the Lithuania penalty area, and in one swift
movement he fired a rising half-volley into the top corner.
Di Natale missed an easy chance when clean through on goal and
Inzaghi sliced a shot wide as Italy looked to extend their lead
before Tadas Labukas headed inches wide for the home side.
