Maybe can be a great place. It's full of possibility, it canfeel like there's [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] an escape hatch available at all times. Maybecan also be what holds us back the most.
The bright, energetic account executive decided to quit dabblingin leadership [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] and really claim it. She started carrying herselfdifferently in meetings-speaking up more and taking risks aboutwhat she said. She became aware of her body language-she took upspace instead of being invisible in the hallways and in groups. She started treating the people at the level above her as [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] peers, rather than being deferential and quiet. She set up ongoingdialogues with the principal of her firm and developed arelationship with him. She voiced a vision about where herdepartment could go and was clear about how she wanted to play aleadership role [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in that vision.
She took a stand. She voiced what she wanted and stood ready tostep into it. She was courageous. The result: She [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] became seenand heard by her company and they created a new position forher. She got more money, more prestige, more opportunities. Shewas even asked to sit on an industry advisory board.
If you're already painting in oils in one part of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] your life, what's the next part that's ready?
And [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] they're hungry for it.
For these two, taking a stand evolved over different lengths oftime. The account executive [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] took five months to claim herleadership. The advertising pro spent nearly two years takingsmall steps at various levels of the process. For some, a bigleap of dramatic, death-defying proportions is the only way towake up. It's move or die. For others, purposefully movingforward can be a dance slowly increasing in tempo...a cha chafrom Etch A Sketch to oils.
I often hear from clients that their number-one frustration isthat they feel as though they're not making an impact-or atleast that impact isn't palpable. They feel as though they're inthe soup in their jobs and lives and that there's no distinctfootprint they're leaving behind. They are in the Etch A Sketchplace of making daily transitory impressions, but nothing longlasting-there's no momentum of purpose.
What does oil painting look like to them?
Both had carefully preserved the land of maybe. They were notcommitted to their current jobs, although they continued to dogood work. But they were not committed to finding the betterpath, either. They were going to work every morning and writingin the Etch A Sketch of life. Shaking it blank and leaving to gohome every night.
Next comes the oil painting stage. What's scarier (and moreexciting) than standing in front of a big white canvas with atube of oil paint and a brush? You can't shake a canvas and makethe picture disappear. It's there in three-dimensionalcolor-beauty, imperfection, ugliness, permanence. There'sboldness in putting oil on canvas. There is a place of taking astand.
Take the Etch A Sketch, for example. One of my favoritechildhood toys. Full of temporary satisfaction, and a greatplace to play with maybe. Sometimes we get stuck in the Etch ASketch place [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] in our lives, carefully keeping one eye on theexit. Etch A Sketch life is a great place to try things on:dating without commitment; temping at a job; renting instead ofbuying; testing a business instead of truly owning it; dabblingat being leader without claiming it. It can be a valuableplace-a testing ground on which to get a sense of [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] what it mightbe like.
Where are you ready to take a stand?
A successful, highly compensated advertising professional whocouldn't care [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] less about the field after six years. Bored andready to quit.
A bright, energetic, hard-working account executive feeling asthough there [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] were no options for [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] her at her large company aftereight years of slow progress. Frustrated and ready to quit.
Which is comfortable for you?
The highly compensated ad man also started taking risks. Hewanted to claim the space of risk-taking. He bought a smallbusiness franchise in Chicago and gave notice to his employer. He traded in short-term security and cash for a longer-termvision. He intends to do many things, including starting atraining and resource center for low-income people who want tostart small businesses. He wants his day-to-day life to be richwith quality, fun, learning, and adventure.
There are deeper Etch A Sketch places, [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] too.
He took a stand and claimed faith in himself. Faith in hisability to navigate ambiguous waters. He's painting in oils andloving it.
Here are some examples I've seen:
-Elizabeth McAloon, CPCC [link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
It's visible. It claims space. No matter what is depicted on thecanvas, painting is bold.
What's the place in your life that has been Etch A Sketch toolong? Where are you [link widoczny dla zalogowanych] ready to switch to oils?
She's flexing her leadership muscle and loving it. She'spainting in oils.
