Students at Burnhamthorpe Elementary School are giving used sneakers a new life in Haiti,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The students have been collecting shoes for the people living on the impoverished island nation after the school decided to support the non-profit group,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Let The Sneakers Walk Again (LTSWA).
Grade 5 teacher Lynne Hay incorporated the program into her class curriculum this fall. Students have since written stories,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], performed plays and created other works of art to promote the cause. The school then sent letters home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], asking for donations of sneakers.
The result,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? The filled six huge bins with shoes that will make their way to the Caribbean country later this month,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
LTSWA is a Toronto-based group that aims to send 100,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 pairs of shoes to Haiti,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where poverty is a fact of life and many people go barefoot. The organization encourages donation of shoes that haven't been worn by people in more than a year and are just "sitting around."
Hay said students embraced the project in ways she never imagined,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The entire school community has brought in running shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "It's the best way to teach. It gives the students a voice and it's meaningful to them."
Some of Hay's students performed skits about out what it might be like to be a sneaker en route to Haiti,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Others penned stories or poems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Meanwhile,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], six students recently accompanied Hay to Yonge-Dundas Square in Toronto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they met with sponsors and other supporters of the program during a one-day celebration attended by Ontario Minister of Health Promotion Margarett Best. The Burnhamthorpe students read aloud their stories and poems.
