"He took pride in that as he matured in age," said Perry. Novelty's reputation was so widespread that the Bata Shoe Museum refers callers to the store. Novelty "came highly recommended to us," said Ada Hopkins, a conservator at the museum. Abate was born above his parents' fruit store on Yonge St. in 1922. He was married to Margaret Abate for 68 years and only retired when her health started to go downhill. She died in 2009. "He had a broken heart for those last three years," said Campbell, but kept going with the love of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Abate has a daughter and three sons, one of whom passed away. He has more than 20 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
